This website is all about me,
Candelaria Silva-Collins
More than anything else, I want to be a writer with a number of books published. I’ve been writing and sending out manuscripts for years
Quick History
My first efforts at writing were poetry and children’s stories. I had a poem published in my high school yearbook and, in my first year of college, in the journal New Letters. I participated in poetry readings during college. I boldly (and nervously) went to the Bay State Banner and declared that I wanted to write reviews…and they let me! I did reviews of books and plays for several years, continuing after I dropped out of college and started a family.
Somewhere during that time, I started writing children’s stories. I had two stories published in Ebony Jr. and one story in The Dictopedia (a children’s reader). I also began to write stories. One story, “Folaké: To Be” was accepted by Essence but not ultimately published. It was later published by Sojourner.
My artistic resume tells most of the rest of this story. I’ve had other stories and essays published – just enough to keep me from giving up writing all together. I’ve had some of the most encouraging rejection letters ever including one from agent Marie Dutton Brown (after a long process of query letter, sample writing, and full manuscript). I’ve gone back and forth on two children’s picture books with Little, Brown Publishers. I’ve read a sad essay and had people cry in response and I’ve read a humorous essay and story and had people laugh out loud. There’s something there that deserves an audience, I’ve thought to myself when these things happened.
The Point
I let myself get sidetracked by life and a demanding job but now – I’m determined to get my writing out there. this website is one way that I’m doing this. It will be filled with stuff: stuff I write, stuff I like, stuff I read, stuff I think about, stuff I recommend…
Thank you for visiting. Welcome to my world.
